Eight decapitated corpses with bullet marks were found in a sparsely populated region of the western Mexican state of Michoacán, where criminal gangs linked to drug trafficking operate, reports AFP, citing the local prosecutor’s office.
Police and forensic experts, alerted by a phone call, “located the bodies of eight men who apparently were wounded by bullets and mutilations,” the attorney general’s office said in a statement Friday.
The bodies were abandoned in a mountainous and sparsely populated area of the Aguililla municipality, where attacks by the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) have been reported in recent days.
A source from the Public Prosecutor’s Office stated, subject to anonymity, that the victims had been beheaded, writes agerpres.ro.
In the state of Michoacán, local cartel gangs destroyed a few years ago and operate cells of the CJNG, based in the neighboring state of Jalisco.
More than 300,000 people have died in Mexico since December 2006, when the federal government launched a controversial military anti-drug operation.
Experts estimate in particular that the mobilization of the army has led to the fragmentation of the cartels into smaller and more violent cells.
