Prime Minister Ludovic Orban announced on Monday that hotels will open after May 15, but not restaurants, cafes and bars, as the latter present a high epidemiological risk. However, he said those who work in open spaces may be able to resume their activities after June 1 or 15. The Prime Minister explained that from an economic point of view, the contribution of the HORECA sector to Romania’s GDP is limited and does not yet represent an emergency, with the health of the population being more important.

“We will open the trade. Sure, except for the shopping malls. But the trade will be open. And it is important that the trade be opened, because people can buy and then production will increase, it will be an incentive to resume production in certain industries. Freedom of movement within the locality will certainly favor companies that sell fuel, because consumption will increase. (…) Hotels will be open. Hotels will not be restricted after May 15. Restrictions will apply to restaurants, cafes, bars. These will remain. From the epidemiological risk assessment, restaurants, especially indoors, are considered to be among the highest epidemiological risks. And it will probably take some time before restaurants can be launched, at least indoors, “he said. Orban at a press conference at the Victoria Palace.

“After May 15, according to the evaluations we have at the moment, restaurants, cafes and bars will not open, neither in closed spaces nor in open spaces. Depending on the evolution of the epidemic, depending on the evolution of the weather conditions, we do not exclude the possibility that those in open spaces, under certain conditions, will open on June 1, June 15. May the season, let’s be honest, start around June 15 and, in fact, after July 1, people are very serious. Therefore, we do not rule out this option. It is true, the epidemiological risk in open spaces for restaurants and cafeterias is lower, but here we must also bear in mind that there is a risk and take specific protection measures to reduce the risk of spread, “said the head of government.

At the same time, Ludovic Orban noted that after May 15, he will be allowed to travel outside the locality for good reasons: business trips, family trips, trips for agricultural activities.

“If we start climbing, mountain trips, it means they can go to the mountains.” In other words, there will be some relaxation in terms of moving out of the localities, which will also increase the demand for accommodation units. I know they are restaurant related, but we cannot launch restaurants yet. (…) We also pay attention to the economy, but health is basic, and if we take it, the contribution to HORECA’s Gross Domestic Product is limited, we can take it for another month and a half, twoLudovic Orban said.
