Belarusian police special forces were stationed on the streets of Minsk before protests challenging the re-election of Alexander Lukashenko as president.

Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, taking hundreds of protesters away by truck. Several people have already been arrested, according to the cited source.

Belarus faces protests and street violence after Lukashenko was re-elected on August 9 for the sixth time in a row.

Lukashenko has been in power for 26 years and various voices, including his opponent in the electoral race, say that the election was rigged.

Also yesterday, the Minsk authorities withdrew the credentials of 17 journalists, mostly Belarusian citizens, who reported to foreign media. Two of those affected are journalists from the Russian BBC service, and the media strongly condemns the attempt to suppress and censor independent journalism.
