I’ll start with a special mention for press UMs like G4 Media, Spot Media and Digi24, who fight with their fists when it comes to journalistic ethics. But who ignored Nicușor Dan almost the entire election campaign, implicitly favoring Gabriela Firea. Therefore, the auspices under which this campaign had started were not at all favorable to Nicusor Dan.
Read again: Nicușor Dan, harshly attacked by CTP and “Coloneleasa”!
By talking to various people who worked on the Nicusor Dan campaign, I can present you with a complete picture of the people who contributed to their victory.
The shadow strategist
First of all, what is not known is that the campaign leader of the elected mayor general was none other than Ludovic Orban. From the first moment, since the prime minister took Nicusor Dan and named him as the party’s candidate. Especially since USR-PLUS was preparing to be thrown overboard by Vlad Voiculescu. Thus, Ludovic Orban forced the hand of the Barna-Cioloș couple, pushing towards a PNL-USR alliance in Bucharest. A risky political move, which could cost him the presidency of the PNL.
Later, he appeared at least 1-2 events a week with Nicușor Dan and also held the hand of the new mayor of the Capital to get the blessing of Klaus Iohannis. From the information provided by the election campaign sources, the entire strategy of Nicușor Dan was made by Ludovic Orban and he was the decision maker and shadow advisor to the elected mayor, while Dacian Cioloș and Dan Barna were more absent. As if I don’t want to win 🙂
Orban also made sure Nicușor Dan had everything he needed financially during the pre-campaign period and opened the PNL wallet for that.
He didn’t even have a choice: Orban even caught his own party by surprise when he resigned an NLP candidate for the Capital City Council, Rareș Bogdan or Violeta Alexandru, and elected Nicușor Dan. A defeat at the Bucharest City Council would have been difficult for Ludovic Orban to manage. Even now we cannot speak of an all-round victory as NLP Bucharest scored very low compared to the national political score, and Nicușor Dan should stick to NLP if he wants to return the favor to Orban. .
The role of USR-PLUS, a minor during the campaign
USR-PLUS and PNL Bucharest provided logistical support for the distribution of brochures, flyers and brochures. Most of the time forgotten at party headquarters or thrown into the street (I know from my experience as a political consultant how useless they are), but someone had to do it too. Otherwise, each shot of his team, as proof of the difference in score between the two games, in favor of USR-PLUS, much more reliable in Bucharest.
A major drawback for party organization at the polling station level: the scandal related to the fraud denounced by Clotilde Armand and Cristian Băcanu could have been closed quickly, with much better management of the representatives in the polling stations. Now, PSD has turned the game around, accusing USR of wanting to defraud the elections in sectors 1, 2 and 5.
A former EvZ journalist and street press conferences
With a whimsical media landscape and generous advertising budgets offered by the City Council, An important role was played by former EvZ journalist Andreea Udrea, who also handled the NLP communication and whose role was to manage the media strategy and appearances of Nicușor Dan. Her insight as a journalist and consultant was seen from Nicușor Dan’s first post-pandemic conference on the street, in which Gabriela Firea’s man, Aurelian Bădulescu, appeared.
This item was unique and belongs to Andreea Udrea. Street press conferences, all over Bucharest, they were a brand of the Nicusor Dan campaign. Which contrasts sharply with the secure and tightly controlled environments in which Gabriela Firea preferred to appear. Taking to the streets, provoking the reaction of the PSD, Nicușor Dan took a risk and raised the “temperature” in the electoral campaign. Relying on PSD’s childish mistakes: the conference with Bădulescu and the closet scene, that of the sanitation machines that Nicușor Dan sprayed, the appearance of Oana “Sparanghel” and pro-PSD protesters trying to prevent the development of campaign events .
After the episode of the recordings with “The Dog”, Nicușor Dan’s team resorted to the strategy used by Traian Băsescu in the 2004 and 2009 campaigns. Attack on Antena 3 and Romania TV, as well as the war with Gabriela Firea. Its veracity was not disputed, but the role of the press was questioned, at least pointed out as partisan. Build a reality to the liking of supporters and offer them arguments for the lack of debates in the electoral campaign.
Fugitive Plahotniuc Consultants
The communication support was managed by Răzvan Săndulescu and Cătălin Dumitru, political consultants who went through many. With extensive experience, from NLP to PSD. The two dealt with the communication of the fugitive Vlad Plahotniuc, when he governed the Republic of Moldova, from the prime minister of the PSD, Viorica Dăncilă, when she became an example of functional illiteracy in politics, but also from Alina Gorghiu, when she led the NLP . Difficult clients with significant but generous image issues …
However, the contribution of the two was more functional, being the established strategy, as I said at the beginning of the article, Ludovic Orban. Those who did not work with him find it more difficult to understand what style the current prime minister has. He prefers a small group of people, follows (only) their ideas, and is extremely tenacious. It doesn’t always work, but in this case it took it all.
The Nicusor Dan campaign intensified after the episode with the recordings related to the famous “Dog”, the accusations against Gabriela Firea continued and Nicusor Dan’s exposure in the online environment increased significantly. It couldn’t be otherwise: you don’t have rallies, you have a pandemic, you don’t have a good part of the media on your side.
But the lack of hot water and the inauguration of the Ciurel Bridge, Nicușor Dan’s best electoral agents, help you from the shadows.
The hot water problem in Bucharest. Little Dan gave the worst news: I was convinced again …
But the campaign is over, a new campaign begins! If the result of Bucharest and the local elections have any effect on the parliamentary score and the configuration of the new Government, we will see it only on December 7.
