Orban Government Labor Minister Violeta Alexandru says that pensions could not be increased by more than 14 percent, and that this percentage increase is seven times higher than the inflation rate. The government looks to the RCC, from which it expects a favorable verdict, and says that a 40 percent increase is not possible because there is no money in the state budget.
Violeta Alexandru blames the PSD, who voted in Parliament the bill that increased pensions by 40 percent. “If the PSD had had the determination to do it, when it ruled in an economic situation incomparable to the one we govern, it certainly could have done it, but it did not want to. I pointed out to you earlier that the difference between us and PSD is that we are responsible. Certainly, an increase is justified and I repeat that it is the most delicate economic period. We did this increase, not PSD… The difference is that we do not promise, but we do things wisely and with reasoning to be good for Romania and our retirees now and in the next period. You cannot imagine an increase in the pension that cannot be sustained in the budget, ”said the Minister of Labor, related to pensions.
All eyes on the Constitutional Court
The bill voted by Parliament was attacked by the Orban Government in the Constitutional Court. If this institution gives the green light to the increase in pensions, then the game should move to the Cotroceni Palace, where President Iohannis can resubmit the bill to Parliament, with certain observations.
As a political observation, currently, on this issue, time is running against the PSD, which no longer has time to re-present the bill for enactment, in the form voted, if the president decides to return it to Parliament, and the idea of The 40 percent will fall permanently with a new Parliament dominated by PNL and USR. This is only if the December 2020 general election is not postponed to a later date, due to an epidemic.
“The CCR deadline is November 25. Things have not recovered financially. I am convinced that it will be a decision that will take into account what is happening at the moment in Romania and in Europe and we are waiting for this decision that I personally I suspect a balanced decision, a decision that takes into account the situation in the country at the moment and that will happen next year. Think that if one year we go through everything we go through in the economy, surely next year things will not return at the level of 2018-2019, because there is no way. Then we will have to make more efforts, we will have to be very serious and attract European funds to Romania, we will have to support the economy so that it recovers and little by little return to normal ” added the Minister of Labor.
