Romanian ships patrolling the external borders of the European Union were caught carrying out dangerous maneuvers. Romanians are accused of violating international law

An investigation launched by the Germans from Der Spiegel reveals serious incidents involving Romanians.

It happened on June 8 and August 15, on the water border between Greece and Turkey. Images published by Bellingcat journalists, with whom Der Spiegel collaborated, show a Romanian ship performing dangerous and illegal maneuvers. All for the rejection of a ship with asylum seekers, preventing him from reaching Greece.

The boats are part of the European Border Police and the Coast Guard Agency. It is about patrolling the external borders of the European Union. But maneuvers like those captured in the video violate international law.

This requires Frontex vessels to provide assistance. But MAI 1103 deliberately increased its speed to create life-threatening waves for migrants. Then they leave the place and let the Greeks solve the situation.

“Such moves to push people back violate the ban on collective deportation and international maritime law,” said Dana Schmalz, an international law expert at the Max Planck Institute in Heidelberg.

The spokesman for the Border Police denied that the law had been violated. “These situations are part of the overall contribution of the authorities with responsibilities in the field”, says Alexandra Găvan.
