The National Committee for Emergency Situations at its meeting on Sunday adopted decision number 61 approving the introduction of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the list of countries / areas / territories of epidemiological risk for which establishes the quarantine measure for people arriving in Romania from these.

The decision provides for the suspension of flights to and from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The decision was made “in view of the emergence of a new strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the request of the National Institute of Public Health and the analysis of risk factors. for the appearance of the new strain at the level of the National Center for Intervention Coordination and Management, taking into account the persistence of a greater number of infected in the national territory, as well as the daily appearance of new cases of infected, both due to circulation of the virus in the national territory as well as its importation, the return to the country of possibly infected people, aspects that generate constant pressure on the management capacity of the administrative-territorial units and the health system ”.

The quarantine measure will take effect on December 21 at 00:00, and the suspension of flights on December 21 at 19:00. The decision will be valid for 14 days.

Hours earlier, DSU chief Raed Arafat told Digi24 that flights could be blocked.

“We had a discussion and the Prime Minister over the phone and the INSP are going to give us a point of view today, an analysis about it. Of course we are following the situation and of course if action is taken, action will be taken. The problem is not that the severity of cases is increasing, but that the number of infected people is increasing. The INSP analysis will be discussed with the Ministry of Health and other colleagues, ”said Raed Arafat of Digi24.

The Secretary of State for the Home Office stated that Romania could also ban flights from Britain on Sunday or Monday.

Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands are blocking flights to the UK, and Germany and France are preparing to do the same, due to fears about the new Covid-19 strain in south-east England.

More than 1,000 cases associated with a new strain have been identified in the UK, especially in the south of the country, where the mutation could be linked to an increase in COVID-19 cases, said British Health Minister Matt Hancock, according to Reuters. .
