Macron, message against the closure of borders
French President Emmanuel Macron warned on Friday of any possible reopening of borders between European Union countries, claiming it would be a counterproductive and ineffective measure against the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, report dpa and Reuters.
Instead, Macron advocated for coordination at the European level and for common approaches to local outbreaks of COVID-19.
“Closing the border between two countries does not make sense when there are outbreaks, areas of active circulation as we call them now, which are clearly identified,” said the French head of state during a visit to a drug factory.
Europe has millions of cross-border workers, some of whom travel between two unaffected regions in different countries, and it would be “absurd” to prevent “everyday life, economic life,” Emmanuel Macron explained.
He said he spoke with Angela Merkel last week during her visit to the French president’s summer residence and hopes to focus on the issue in the coming days.
“We will work in the coming days to advance on this issue. Let us not repeat the mistakes of March in this regard. It would be counterproductive and, above all, ineffective in the fight against the spread of the virus,” the French president explained.
