Seven EU member states – Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Malta, Romania, Spain and Hungary – are experiencing an evolution of the COVID-19 epidemic that causes “great concern” and increased mortality risks, the Center warned on Thursday European Surveillance and Prevention. Diseases (ECDC), according to AFP, assumed by Agerpres.
The latest risk assessment report from the European Agency for Outbreak Monitoring shows that all seven countries have a “higher percentage of severe cases or hospitalizations”, with an increase in mortality “already observed” or “likely to occur soon” . .
“In some regions of these countries, health systems are already under pressure, with high occupancy of hospital beds and ATI wards and advanced medical staff. Improvements that have been made in case management and treatments applied are not sufficient to avoid the worsening of the disease or death in patients with vulnerabilities.
The imposition of strict restrictions, which has proven to be an effective measure to control the spread of the pandemic in the EU in spring 2020, appears to be the only strategy that can guarantee a moderate (rather than high) impact of the disease in people and health systems. As such, in these countries, even with the imposition of strict restrictive measures, the overall risk of Covid-19 remains high in the general population and very high for vulnerable people, ”the report also notes.
