The leaders of two federations of retirees announced this Thursday the organization of a rally in front of the Government on October 1, International Day of the Elderly, in protest against several measures that they consider abusive towards retirees recently adopted by the Minister of Labor. and Social Protection, Violeta Alexandru, transmits Agerpres.
The leader of one of the retiree federations organizing the event mentioned in a press conference that the government’s decision to increase pensions by 14% instead of applying the legislation on increasing pensions by 40% was not one of the reasons for organizing the rally, but the leader of the second pensioner federation listed the issue of the increase in pension among the reasons for organizing the event.
As the first reason to organize the rally, the president of the National Federation of Pensioners of Romania (FNPR), Preda Nedelcu, claimed that the Minister of Labor and Social Protection, Violeta Alexandru, decided to change the procedure to grant financial aid to poor pensioners on the occasion of the International Peoples’ Day. The elderly and the replacement of money for food, thus violating the provisions of Law 363 of 2003, organizing the celebration of the International Day of the Elderly – October 1.
“The Ministry of Labor does not want to comply with this law, which contains, among other things, the inclusion in the budget of the Ministry of Labor of sums that will be allocated to the granting of financial aid to pensioners in difficulty. In this way, almost 20 years have passed, until this year, when Minister Violeta Alexandru decided not to comply with this law and decided to grant pensioners, of the amounts that we do not know, food packages. (…) It is a right, it is a law, which begins like this: “to finance the activities organized for the celebration in Romania of the International Day of the Elderly” (Minister of Labor, no.) It does not give money! Why? Just because it has the power? And the prime minister, whom I notified this abuse of the Minister of Labor takes no action, does not give us any response. For that we go out to the street. It’s not right, ”said the leader of the FNPR.
On the other hand, Preda Nedelcu reproached the Minister of Labor for deciding to interrupt the remuneration of some specialists from the National Council of Retiree Organizations (CNOP).
“The minister has decided -with her own power- that this work apparatus of the Council will not be remunerated as of August. There are six sociologists there. One is ill. For two months they have not received their salary, without justification There is no legal basis We understand if he has something to take revenge on us, the leaders of the pensioners’ organizations But what does he have to do with those people He did it without any embarrassment, violating a law, Law 16/2000 on the organization of this Council “We will protest this attitude of Minister of Labor, who simply humiliates us “, mentioned the president of the Federation.
The leader of the FNPR stressed that the issue of raising pensions was not among the reasons for organizing the event.
“We did not organize the rally to increase pensions, because they increase without our asking,” said Preda Nedelcu.
In turn, the president of the National Federation “Union” of Pensioners of Romania (FNUPR), Dumitru Cojanu, confirmed that the two complaints listed by the leader of the FNPR determined that the pensioners took to the streets, but pointed out the issue of increase in pensions as the main reason for organizing the event.
These three themes are the main objectives of pensioners in Romania in the protest that will take place on this holiday, October 1, 2020. Instead of retirees being able to celebrate this important day for them in conditions suitable to their life and health , are forced to go out on the streets, to protest (…) I am convinced that the actions and measures that we will take, and the support that we will receive from public opinion, will result in better results for pensioners in “The rally will be in Victoriei Square, in front of the Government. Unfortunately, the state of alert stipulates that there will be a maximum of 100 people and the same number will be and will respect the measures provided for distancing and the use of masks, “said the president of the National Federation. . Union “of pensioners of Romania.
