The statute of deputies and senators provided that parliamentarians who meet the conditions of retirement age are entitled, at the end of their term, to the old-age allowance, if they are not re-elected for a new term.
The amount of the allowance is granted in 3 installments and is calculated as the product of the number of months in office with 0.55% of the gross monthly allowance in payment. The net amount of the old-age allowance may not exceed the net income corresponding to a gross monthly allowance of a deputy or senator in office. In the case of incomplete terms, the old-age benefit will be calculated in proportion to the term actually exercised, but not less than one parliamentary term.
The Romanian state pays approximately 37 million lei for the special pensions of 870 former MPs.
