Chief Commissioner Christian Ciocan, spokesman for the Federation of Democratic Trade Unions of the Romanian Police, reacted after Mayor Nicușor Dan’s remarks.
We have all heard today’s statements by Mr. Nicușor Dan, currently elected Mayor General of Bucharest, about the involvement of the Romanian police in the quarantine measures on the streets of Bucharest.
Mr. Nicușor Dan created a difficulty and the Prime Minister of Romania, Ludovic Orban, intervened. Mr. Nicușor Dan, who is only the Mayor of Bucharest, referred to the Police, since he appreciates, we do not know in what way, that Bucharest is quarantined on the streets.
We do not understand what Mr. Nicușor Dan meant, nor do we care, but we inform the citizens of Romania about the following:
The Romanian Police is an institution of the state force that defends the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens. It operates on the basis of a law and is subject only to the hierarchical heads, vertically, only to the Minister of the Interior, Mr. Marcel Vela. The statements of Mr. Dan Nicușor, Mayor of Bucharest, are worrying for us, ” said Christian Ciocan.
Tomorrow, at the level of the leadership of the Federation, their statements will be analyzed and a decision will be made on what we will have to do in the face of this interference, even at the declaratory level of a public person, regarding the activity of the Police. We want it to be understood very clearly! At this time, the Romanian Police, through all its subordinate structures, has been, is and will continue to be in the front line. We ask everyone to let us do our job! The statements of their lords, regardless of whether they are mayors, who are citizens elected for the ordering of credits at the level of some localities or in another area, must refer to something completely different from the Romanian Police. This institution operates only in accordance with the law, as I mentioned earlier, ”Ciocan stressed.
”At the level of Bucharest, only the prefect, Mr. Berbeceanu, is the only one who decides, in the context of the Committee for Emergency Situations, and not even then because the Police is a structure of the Romanian state. The police act in accordance with the law and the provisions of the Romanian state, in collaboration with the prefect and all other public authorities of our country. Mr. Dan Nicușor made these remarks precisely because journalists repeatedly asked him what he meant by quarantine in the streets. The difference between us and journalists, to whom we thank and owe all our respect, is that we are not concerned with what Mr. Dan Nicusor understands about quarantines. We are concerned about the protection of Romanian citizens and their fundamental rights. We welcome the repeated question from journalists today, which put Nicusor Dan in trouble, prompting the Prime Minister to intervene, ” Christian Ciocan concluded for DC News.
