PSD President Marcel Ciolacu says Prime Minister Ludovic Orban’s attack on the Constitutional Court is unprecedented in Romania in the last 30 years and represents an attack on the rule of law.
PSD leader’s reaction comes after Prime Minister Ludovic Orban harshly criticized, on Thursday night, on Digi24, the Constitutional Court, after the decision “abracadabrant”, says the prime minister, who took CCR in connection with the parliamentary elections. Ludovic Orban said that the ICR must be “changed” and cleansed of political tricks, and must include technocrats.
“I have never come across such a speech in 30 years of democracy. I think he forgot his position in the Romanian state. It’s the prime minister! The main pillar of the rule of law is the Constitutional Court. The Prime Minister of Romania attacks the rule of law. As prime minister, you do not have the right to comment on a decision of the CCR, if you want to defend the rule of law, “said Marcel Ciolacu, on Thursday night, on Antena 3.
“Attacking the Constitutional Court in a European state could not be more undemocratic by a prime minister,” added Marcel Ciolacu.
He pointed out that also in the United States the members of the Constitutional Court (Supreme Court – no.) Are elected by the basic body of democracy, by Parliament (they are proposed by the president and confirmed by Congress – no.). “It just came to our notice then. Like the decision or not, it’s your job!” Said Marcel Ciolacu.
The Social Democratic leader added, ironically, that Romania’s fundamental law “is busier”, but is willing to send it to the prime minister, “maybe read it in its entirety”, because otherwise he uses “fragments of the Constitution”.
Referring to the case that led to Ludovic Orban’s criticism of the ICR – which sets the date for parliamentary elections – Marcel Ciolacu said that there are precedents in Romania when the Parliament set the date for the elections.
“There are precedents in Romania, in 2004 or 2006, when the Parliament set the date for the elections and there were no problems. The most important body in a democracy is Parliament, not the Government. The government is a product of Parliament. You can’t appear on television and lie to people like that. I was hoping he would say what stops these infections, not his fight with CCR, the world is tired of his explanations, you see his ferocity to have all the power in Romania. God forbid something like that to happen, ”Ciolacu said, quoted by Agerpres.
