Peru’s Attorney General’s Office announced this Friday that it will open an investigation for corruption against President Martín Vizcarra at the end of his term in July 2021, reports AFP.
“After receiving the report from the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office specialized in crimes of corruption of officials, I decided that there are reasons to investigate the President of the Republic,” said the Attorney General’s Office in a statement.
As a consequence of the immunity that the Constitution grants to the head of state, “the beginning of the investigation is suspended until July 28, 2021, when (the president) will leave office,” said the Prosecutor’s Office.
The case, in which an unsuccessful dismissal procedure was initiated against President Vizcarra in September, refers to the hiring of a singer by the Ministry of Culture. Justice suspects that this little-known artist, Richard Cisneros, alias “Richard Swing”, allegedly received some $ 50,000 under a formal lecture contract.

“The Democratic forces in Congress cannot lend themselves to this dirty game, caused by political and electoral interests,” the president said in a message to the nation.
The corruption scandal, which shakes public opinion, refers to the hiring, in the middle of a pandemic, of a singer by the Ministry of Culture, the justice suspecting that the little-known artist benefited from a contract of complacency.
This political crisis comes at a time when Congress is opposed to the reform promoted by the government aimed at prohibiting the participation of convicts in elections.
