Who is Piedone

Popescu Piedone was mayor of Sector 4 from 2008 to November 2015, when he resigned a few days after the fire in the Colectiv club, as a result of which 64 young people died. Piedone resigned on November 4, 2015, the same day as then-Prime Minister Víctor Ponta, after thousands of people demanded his resignation on the street.

  • After all the reactions of the last few days, after the emotion and anger totally justified and expressed in public space in search of the guilty, after yesterday’s rally in the Capital in which thousands of bucharest people demanded my resignation, I had time to reflect and I came to the following conclusion: Today I resign as Mayor of Sector 4, out of respect for the victims of the tragedy, and I hope that the legislative vacuum and administrative deficiencies will sound the alarm, from the simplest civil servant to the most high forum. Perhaps when thousands of people take to the streets to ask you to leave and thousands more ask for the same thing on social networks, sometimes it is good to listen, ”Piedone said at the time.

In December last year, the Bucharest Court issued the first judgments in the collective case. The court then decided that the former mayor of Sector 4 should remain behind bars for eight years and six months and not be able to enjoy further rights for five years.

Thus, Piedone was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison for abuse of office if the official obtained an undue benefit for another, with particularly serious consequences, plus additional punishment with the prohibition of rights with a duration of 5 years. He also received 3 years in prison for abuse of office if the official obtained an undue benefit for another and a complementary sanction of 3 years of prohibition of certain rights. Under the Penal Code, he will serve the harshest sentence, namely 7 years and 6 months in prison, plus a year of increase.

The decision taken by the Bucharest Court in December 2019 is not final and is appealed to the Bucharest Court of Appeal. On Wednesday, September 30, the Bucharest Court of Appeal will begin, after a postponement, the trial of the appeal in the case.

However, it is not the only conviction of Cristian Popescu Piedone. In 2018, he was definitively sentenced to one year in prison with suspension, for committing the crime of using the function to favor certain people. Specifically, Piedone was found guilty of using his mayoral position to benefit his children’s businesses.
