What is Stargardt, the disease that Elena Krawzow suffers from
Stargardt macular degeneration is a genetic disorder of the eye that leads to a progressive loss of vision. It is a form of photosensitive tissue dystrophy that affects the central area of the retina called the macula.
The prognosis is highly variable, from a slight loss to a total loss of vision. To date, there is no cure for Stargardt disease.
Juvenile macular degeneration (Stargardt disease) is different from age-related macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of vision loss in the elderly population and affects approximately 30-50 million people worldwide.
Degenerative diseases of the retina are divided into two main categories:
- retinitis pigmentosa (which affects night vision and peripheral vision)
- macular degenerations, which affect central vision.
Macular degenerations (or macular dystrophies) include Stargardt’s disease, Best’s disease, Malattia Leventinese disease, and others.
