People from the regions near Nagorno-Karabakh, over which Azerbaijan is to regain control, set fire to their homes on Sunday (November 15) before leaving for Armenia. Dozens of houses were burned in the surrounding area.
“This is the last day, tomorrow the Azerbaijani soldiers will be there”, said a soldier from the Charektar village in the Kalbajar region, who will be handed over to Azerbaijan.
In this town alone, which marks the border with the neighboring district of Martakert, which must remain under Armenian control, at least six houses were burned on Saturday morning, Mediafax notes.
In a video released by the BBC, people say that they will not leave their houses to foreigners and that they already know that everyone in the region will burn their houses before they leave.
“This is my house, I can’t leave it to the Turks,” said the owner of one of the burning houses. “They are all going to burn their house today (…) They gave us until midnight to leave. We have also moved our parents’ grave, Azerbaijanis will have the pleasure of desecrating our graves, it is unbearable,” he added.
A peace accord signed between Yerevan and Baku under the auspices of Moscow ended almost seven weeks of intense fighting in Nagorno Karabakh, a mountainous enclave disputed for decades between these two Caucasian countries. Azerbaijan has regained large territories under Armenian control since the early 1990s. Now about 2,000 Russian soldiers will be deployed there to keep the peace.
