Patricia Țig continues her very good week in Istanbul with a convincing new victory, this time against Czech Tereza Martincova. It was 6-3, 6-3 for Pati, who qualified for the first final of the season, the second since she returned to the circuit and the third of her career.
With no sets lost in victories with Danilovic, Doi, Peterson and Martincova, Patricia will seek her first WTA trophy against Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard in her first match.
Once again, Patricia returned after a start in which she was led with a break: from 1-3, she managed to win ten of the next eleven games, putting herself in the position to take the game 6-3, 5-1. She failed to close the first count, but after Martincova won two games, Patricia finished the match, avoiding other unnecessary complications.
The Romanian won 62 percent of the points played on the first serve and saved 5 of the 9 break points she faced, turning it into turn 7 of 9.
The match also had a tense moment, which resulted in a warning for both players from the referee. Patricia and Tereza did not greet each other at the end of the game.
Qualifying for the final skips a few more places for Patricia, already secured by the fact that, starting next week, she will have a new personal record in the WTA rankings. With points for the final, she will rise to 64th position from Monday, a total jump of 24 positions, which means that Patricia will be, next week, the second player from Romania in the standings, after Simona, a promotion. notable taking note that Patricia didn’t have a ranking last spring. A possible title would elevate him to 58th place.
Patricia’s final precedents were played in Baku, in 2015 (she lost to Gasparyan) and in Bucharest, in 2019 (she lost to Rybakina). Patricia has a 125k WTA title in mind, won last summer, also in scum, in Karlsruhe (with Van Uytvanck).
The presence in the final is a significant moment for Eugenie Bouchard, Pati’s rival tomorrow. The Canadian, former world No. 5, is now 272 (but was even shorter than that). In Istanbul he entered the qualifying phase with the help of a wild card, but confirmed his good form after the return shown in Prague, tying a series of impressive victories, especially some tough and long matches. Bouchard defeated Jorovic, Kung, Tomova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Danka Kovinic and, today, Paula Badosa Gibert (6-3, 6-2), in her first WTA final since March 2016. Bouchard will jump for 163 months, or 137 with a title.
