In the parliamentary elections on December 6, parties standing for election must cross the 5% threshold to enter Parliament. In addition to the 5% threshold, the law also provides an alternative threshold that helps parties with a strong electoral group only in certain areas of the country, such as the UDMR.
The electoral threshold represents the minimum required number of valid votes cast for parliamentary representation, that is, 5% of the total valid votes cast at the national level.
The alternative electoral threshold means that a party must obtain at least 20% of the total valid votes cast in at least four electoral districts for all voters.
The phrase “20% of the total votes validly cast in at least four electoral districts for all districts” means that to meet the electoral threshold condition, a competitor must obtain 20% of the validly cast votes in each of the four districts. .
Likewise, the electoral threshold condition is considered fulfilled if for a single Chamber of Parliament the electoral contestant obtained 5% of the valid votes expressed at the national level. In this case, the respective competitor will receive mandates only in that House of Parliament.
These provisions do not apply to organizations of citizens belonging to national minorities that have submitted applications at the national level.
How many votes must an independent get to enter Parliament?
The number of votes required for independents to win the parliamentary seat depends on several factors: the constituency in which they are running, whether they voted for the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate and, last but not least, the number of the who will go to the polls.
