It is about the politician and poet Szécs Géza, who died in Budapest, infected with Covid-19. The one who was senator of the UDMR Cluj between 1990 and 1992 died at the age of 67, due to complications after contracting the terrible infectious disease.

While he was a UDMR senator, Géza Szőcs also held leadership positions in this party, currently led by President Hunor Kelemen. Also, the politician was known and highly appreciated both at home and abroad, including for his literary activity.

Szécs Géza lived in Switzerland between 1986 and 1989, and when he returned to the country, in Cluj, he began his political activity at the UDMR. His career began with one of the moments that remained in the memory of Romanian politics: present on December 1, 1990 in Alba Iulia, he was booed by the crowd in the presence of Petre Roman and Ion Iliescu.

The most important position that the politician held was that of Minister of State for Culture in the Government of Hungary, whose leader is Viktor Orban. It happened in May 2010, when Orban invested him in this position. Later, the poet was also an adviser to the Prime Minister of Hungary on cultural issues. A year later, more precisely on April 2, 2011, Géza participated in the act that marked the restoration of the Matei Corvinul complex in Unirii square in Cluj-Napoca.

It was one of the rare occasions in which the Romanian and Hungarian governments collaborated effectively, with the works being co-financed by officials from Bucharest and Budapest. As for his work as an author, the politician has written numerous articles, volumes of poetry and translations, for which he has received numerous cultural awards.

Szőcs Géza was born in Târgu Mureş

Géza Szőcs, born in Târgu Mureș, was co-editor of the samizdat magazine (No. “Ellenpontok” (Counterpoints) between 1981 and 1983.

Because the publication was printed in Oradea, he was arrested and subjected to repeated pressure by the Securitate, the fact that the intelligence file contains no less than 16 volumes is eloquent in this regard. Between 1989 and 1990 he directed the Radio Free Europe studio in Budapest.
