After complying with all the administrative procedures, which remained to be carried out by the beneficiary, we are going to establish the moment when the subway can be put into operation with passengers ”, declared Transport Minister Lucian Bode.

“Now we find ourselves in a situation where I can say with certainty that soon the inhabitants of Bucharest will be able to use the most anticipated means of transport in this area, namely the Camp road metro. It was a titanic job, started from the first day of my mandate as minister, to be able to offer the people of Bucharest, the Drumul Taberei area and not only, what they had been waiting for for so many years. I am grateful to all who made it possible for us to achieve this extremely happy outcome for the people of Bucharest today, “said Minister Lucian Bode.

According to sources close to the project, there are still small details to be resolved until the official inauguration and the exact moment when the new bus would be open to passenger traffic is still being discussed, either on Sunday afternoon, or Monday or most likely on Tuesday.

Although the M5 is open to passenger traffic, works on Highway 5 will continue in several areas, at some access points, on the surface and in the underground passage area of Drumul Taberei Park.

Contracts for the Drumul Taberei M5 were signed in spring 2011 and construction began shortly thereafter. According to the contract, the duration of the works of the galleries, stations and warehouse was 36 months, that is, 3 years. In addition to this deadline, work remained to be done on the signaling and automation systems (which were auctioned separately and, after numerous resources, signed in 2019 with Alstom).

The first deadline for the metro at Drumul Taberei was 2015. However, over time, the M5 motorway faced major issues: approval issues, major financing issues (especially during the PSD-Ponta government in 2013), unforeseen works occurred during the execution of the works.

Ten Bombardier trains from the current fleet will run on Highway 5, as announced by Metrorex representatives. Now both Bombardier trains and old VAT trains are used for dynamic testing.

Metro line 5, Râul Doamnei – Eroilor Section (PS Opera), including Valea Ialomiţei, will be almost 7 kilometers long and consists of 10 metro stations and a depot (Râul Doamnei, Constantin Brâncuşi, Valea Ialomiţei, Romancierilor, Parc Drumul Camp, Tudor Vladimirescu, Favorite, Horizon, Military Academy, Heroes 2).

The total value of the Drumul Taberei-Eroilor metro project is 3.4 billion lei. With the inauguration of this highway, the Capital will reach 78 kilometers of network and 63 metro stations.

Highway 5 is made up of three sections: Eroilor – Râul Doamnei, Eroilor – Iancului, respectively Iancului – Pantelimon.

Train succession intervals of up to 90 seconds

On Highway 5, Alstom implemented a digital train control system – the first CBTC (communication-based train control) signaling system installed in Romania.

The M5 was equipped with the system of the Urbalis 400 range, a system implemented worldwide in 23 countries, on 101 metro lines, including 17 vending machines. In Europe, the system is already in operation in cities such as Malaga and Amsterdam.

“Urbalis 400 is an advanced traffic control system for communication-based train control, which will help reduce traffic congestion in Bucharest because the systems increase transport capacity with train succession intervals of up to 90 seconds. Constantly modernized and specially designed for metro lines with a large number of passengers, the system offers a considerable range of functions, which helps to reduce the interval of train succession and increase the average speed ”, details Alstom.
