The 2021/2022 season will bring an important change at the European level.
UEFA has decided to organize the third European club competition, the Conference League. This decision struck like a thunderbolt for clubs with European claims in League 1. Basically, starting next season, Romanian teams sanctioned in the Europa League.
At least until 2024, we are out of the Europa League. The second and third place occupants and the winner of the Romanian Cup will qualify in the second round of the Conference League preliminaries.
The Romanian champion will enter the 1st preliminary round of the Champions League and will have to overcome 4 rounds to the groups. The winner of League 1 is the only one who could enter the Europa Leauge. In case of being eliminated from the Champions League preliminaries, he will reach the qualification for the Europa League. Only in case of exiting the Champions League playoffs is there a guarantee of entering the Europa League groups.
Of the 48 teams that are now entering the group stage of the Europa League, 32 will remain. The division will be done exactly as in the Champions League, in 8 groups of 4 clubs each.
The almost invisible European performances of Romanian teams in recent years have led League 1 to an increasingly difficult position to accept in the UEFA coefficient rankings. FCSB and CFR Cluj were the only teams to accumulate points for Romania in recent years.
What will the Conference League be like
The competition will take place in a format similar to the Champions League and Europa League. It will include 32 teams in the group stage, and 8 groups of 4 teams will be formed.
The eighth will be preceded by a playoff with 16 teams, in which the teams in the 2nd places in the groups and those in the 3rd places in the Europa League groups will fight.
In the end, the winner of the Conference League will qualify for the next season of the Europa League groups.
