He graduated from the “Tudor Vladimirescu” Military Higher School in Craiova in 1985 and then graduated from the “Nicolae Bălcescu” Military School for Active Officers in Sibiu in 1988. Nicolae Ciucă was embroiled in a scandal late last year between the Defense Ministry and Klaus Iohannis.

On December 28, 2018, Iohannis signed the decree to extend the mandate of General Nicolae Ciuca as Chief of Defense Staff for one year, after rejecting the proposal made by the Ministry of National Defense for this position at the CSAT meeting.

Subsequently, Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă and Defense Minister Gabriel Leş accused the president of having no legal basis, because the proposal to extend his mandate did not come from the Ministry of National Defense.

The situation was debated in court, which ruled in favor of the Presidential Administration.
