The radio wave was captured during 30 hours of observations by the Parkes telescope in Australia. Researchers have not yet been able to identify whether it is coming from a terrestrial transmitter, such as ground equipment or a passing satellite.
The search for life elsewhere has been long and profoundly unproductive, at least in terms of trying to find extraterrestrial civilizations.
Astronomers working on the “Breakthrough Listen” project constantly listen to sounds from space, but until now, all the radio waves they have captured have been attributed to terrestrial sources. But not this time.
This last signal could also come from a common source on Earth, but the narrow beam with a frequency of around 980 mhz, appears to be consistent with the movement of a distant planet, which makes this mysterious phenomenon even more interesting. Following the findings, the researchers are preparing a scientific paper detailing their initial findings.
