Doctors at the “Victor Babeş” Infectious Diseases Hospital in Timişoara administer a new antiviral drug, Favipiravir, to COVID-19 patients, which helps the new coronavirus to be cleared more quickly from the body and relieves symptoms of infection by SARS-CoV-2. informs Agerpres.

“The drug is administered to patients with a moderate form of COVID-19 infection, with modified inflammation samples. I noticed that between 24 and 48 hours after the introduction of this treatment, the lung inflammation decreased significantly. The duration of hospitalization of the patient was reduced and the PCR tests were negative faster, even a few days faster than usual, “said Dr. Maria Cerbu, GP for infectious diseases at the” Victor Babeş “Hospital in Timişoara.

Experts point out that there is a very short window of time in which the drug can be administered, so the effect is as expected. The duration of treatment is five days.

Because side effects can occur, treatment can only be given in a hospital under the supervision of a doctor.

Favipiravir is an antiviral drug that inhibits RNA. Doctors in Timisoara say that it has been used so far to treat severe forms of influenza, but also against very strong viruses, which can trigger deadly infections.

The drug, which entered the treatment scheme approved by the Ministry of Health two months ago, helps eliminate the SARS-CoV-2 virus faster and thus reduces the period of hospitalization. It also alleviates the symptoms of the new coronavirus infection.

The drug is also included in the therapeutic protocols of countries such as Japan, India and China. Romania has announced that it will import more than 700,000 favipiravir tablets that will be distributed to front-line hospitals in the fight against the new coronavirus.
