A representative of a company that installs medical equipment in ATI departments spoke to Digi24 about the way improvisations are done in many of Romania’s hospitals. Sorin Popa illustrated with a series of photographs the numerous irregularities identified in the medical units, from unplugged plugs to non-compliant cables.
Sorin Popa works for a company that installs medical equipment in anesthesia and intensive care units. Also, he volunteers with the Bucharest-Ilfov ambulance service and says he sees things on both sides.
In the context of the tragedy that occurred at the Neamț County Hospital, where a fire in ATI claimed the lives of ten people, the man tells how in some of the medical units of the country, where he frequently goes, there are these problems of improvisations.
“I am an engineer by profession, I specialize in the installation of medical equipment and I have found that very often purchases are made of high-performance medical equipment, but that they are installed in power systems that do not comply with any regulations. Not to mention “Critical situations that can arise in places like intensive care units. Even in an apartment, such a thing would not be allowed, as seen in the illustrated images,” said Sorin Popa.
The man specializes in the installation of medical equipment, such as monitors, ventilators, or defibrillators.
“I can tell you that in 3-4 hospitals that I frequently visit there are these irregularities. It does not take a specialist to enter ATI and see that some points of sale do not comply. They can be seen from the entrance and in the areas where they are waiting. patients, in the offices, there are improvisations everywhere, from the heating installations, which are supplied from the electrical site, to the supply of more special equipment ”, says Sorin Popa.
Asked how long these devices are checked or at what intervals they should be changed, the man said that he can give an example of the facilities that even the company he works for installs.
“There are regulations in the electrical field, I don’t know exactly on the installations side how many years the verification is done. I can tell you that it is an obligation that the ones we install are reviewed annually. This does not always happen, it is often done only on paper. There are companies that check these equipment after installation only on paper. Only when it finds that something is defective does it act. I am not saying that it happens in most hospitals, I have not checked in all hospitals, but at some point the exception is then. when it’s actually being checked correctly, “added the man.
What do you think could have happened in Neamț?
“Medical equipment is not a large consumer, which creates problems. Many smaller consumers of this type, powered by non-compatible plugs can cause local overheating of a conductor. A plug can catch fire if it is not manufactured If we have a little of oxygen in the room and other combustible materials, the path to fire is very short ”, concluded the representative of the ATI salon rehabilitation company.
