UPDATE 16:54: More than 10,000 people signed the petition asking MPs not to vote for Florin Iordache as president of the Legislative Council of Parliament.
The signatures were collected in a few hours. “In record time, thousands of people signed and distributed this urgent petition. It is an alarm signal for those elected: the citizens who voted for them do not give them a mandate to appoint a person harmful to Romania in an important position.” ”, Affirm the initiators of the petition, according to Agerpres.
The petition, addressed to the presidents of both houses of Parliament, Marcel Ciolacu and Robert Cazanciuc, recalls that Florin Iordache was “the most visible and devoted defender of Liviu Dragnea.”
Official notice: “We, the signatories of this petition, ask you not to appoint Florin Iordache as president of the Legislative Council of Parliament. An essential institution for future laws cannot be led by a former Minister of Justice, who has demonstrated his loyalty only the leader of his party, with the approval of GEO 13 ”, is shown in the text of the online petition.
The initiators consider that a politically impartial person should be appointed to this position.
“The Romanian Parliament is preparing to make Florin Iordache, the craftsman of GEO 13, a gift for life: a leadership position in the Legislative Council, the institution that passes all bills in Parliament. The head of the Legislative Council cannot be revoked and the position is for life, according to the law.
Florin Iordache is the former Minister of Justice who, in January 2017, approved GEO 13 through which the laws of justice were rewritten in favor of those who argue with the law. He’s the one who answered with “another question!” and the one who was the most visible and devoted defender of Liviu Dragnea.
In the position of president of the Legislative Council, we need an impartial person, not one devoted to political leaders, ”the initiators of the petition also show.
Minister of Justice at the date of approval of the famous GEO 13, the social democrat Florin Iordache would be elected by Parliament as president of the Legislative Council, political sources say.
The Legislative Council is the institution that approves all bills presented to Parliament before entering the debate in the two Houses. The incumbents of the Legislative Council are appointed by vote of senators and deputies, but the law does not establish a term limit or a procedure by which they can be revoked, which means that Florin Iordache will be appointed for life.
Instead, the Liberals appointed Augustin Zegrean, former president of the Romanian Constitutional Court, to head the same institution.
