MFA asks Hungary for clarification on border closure

Based on the information published in the public space on some decisions of the Hungarian Government regarding the adoption of new measures for the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that clarifications have already been requested about the Romanian Embassy in Budapest. the content of the aforementioned decisions and their impact on Romanian citizens traveling in Hungary and respectively through Hungary, as a transit state, to other European states, as well as in relation to Romanian citizens, cross-border workers. Hungary will re-impose border restrictions on September 1 as part of measures to limit the transmission of the coronavirus, Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s chief of staff announced on Friday.

Gergely Gulyas said that Hungary is returning to the restrictions imposed during the first stage of the coronavirus epidemic.

Although “the infection situation is relatively good” in Hungary compared to other European countries, there are still quite a few cases of Covid-19, said Gergely Gulyas, cited by MTI.

As of September 1, foreign nationals will not be allowed to enter Hungary. Hungarian citizens returning to the country will have to be quarantined for 14 days if they do not have two negative coronavirus tests, performed within 48 hours. There will be exceptions for military convoys, some employers, some categories of cross-border, diplomatic and transit workers.

Gergely Gulyas argued that measures are needed to protect the elderly from infection with the new coronavirus, as well as to avoid new economic problems. The measure was also taken in the context of the reopening of schools in Hungary on September 1.
