The Mayor General of the Capital, Nicușor Dan, declared on Saturday that he has no intention of collecting illegally parked cars in Bucharest, except for “flagrant cases”, although the law now allows him to initiate such actions.

The mayor announced that he will have a meeting on this issue in the next period with the representatives of the sectorial mayors in Bucharest, specifying that “the greatest responsibility lies with the sectorial mayors.”

Dan said his plan is to try to get the roughly 50,000-60,000 abandoned cars off the streets.

I don’t want to penalize people. I want to collect abandoned cars because, according to the estimates of the people I work with, there are between 50 and 60,000 abandoned cars in Bucharest. 50-60,000 cars abandoned, picked up, and taken elsewhere means 50-60,000 new parking spaces, which take the pressure off boulevards, green spaces.. “- said the mayor general.

Asked if illegally parked cars will be attacked, not just abandoned ones, Nicușor Dan answered affirmatively, specifying that he intends to penalize only drivers who park in “blatant” places, on crosswalks or at bus stops.

“We have a big transport and parking problem in Bucharest. It is a vicious circle. People are in traffic because there are parked cars, many legal and few illegal in the first lane. Cars are parked, because people use the car, because it does not trust public transport and with good reason. In my opinion, it is not correct at this time to sanction people, except those who blatantly park in crosswalks, at bus stops. (…) So Except for flagrant cases, I am not in favor of penalizing drivers. It is an effort that must be made by the authorities. ” – Nicusor Dan also said at a press conference.

Cars illegally parked in the public domain can be picked up, in accordance with the law

A law has been published in the Official Gazette, which aims to change the rules for the management of localities and allows the removal of illegally parked cars in the public domain.

Thus, according to Law no. 273/2020 (published in Official Gazette No. 1133), the prohibition of parking any type of vehicle in the public domain is introduced, outside the spaces marked for this purpose.
