May 10 has special significance in the modern history of Romania.
Upon arriving in the country in secret, with a false passport, due to the conflict that her country, Prussia, had with the Habsburg Empire, Carol I triumphantly entered the capital of Romania on May 10, 1866, acclaimed by more than 30,000 Bucharest.
With this episode, May 10 became Romania’s National Day, remaining to this day known as Royalty Day.
Also on May 10, another great Romanian victory is linked to Carol I. In 1877, Romania announced its independence from the Ottoman Empire, and with Carol I at the head of the Romanian and Russian allied armies, our country gained its independence in the battlefield.
On May 10, 1881, in a luxurious ceremony, the coronation of Prince Carol I as King of Romania took place.
Carol I’s reign would end after 48 years, making it the longest reign in the history of the Romanian states. It was succeeded by King Ferdinand, his nephew, under whose reign Romania experienced the greatest territorial extension. The Hohenzollern dynasty would rule Romania until King Michael’s abdication in 1947 and the communists seized power.
Two years after the Revolution, King Miguel was to return to the country and be greeted by an impressive number of Romanians. Almost a million people are said to have taken to the streets to see their former King.
This year, King’s Day will be one without events, in Romania, due to the epidemic. His Majesty Margaret will send a message to all Romanians and crowns will be placed on the Statue of King Carol I and the bust of King Mihai I in Bucharest.
