Little Dan took a taxi to talk about the future of transportation. What plans does the new mayor have?

“It is the beginning of a beautiful friendship”, announced this Friday the elected mayor of the Capital, Nicușor Dan, about his relationship with the Ministry of Transport.

And it is normal that the new mayor wants a very good relationship with the transportation officials. Goodwill and the desire to work depend on metro traffic, works to widen the capital’s belt, but also on a daring project by Nicușor Dan: the surface light rail.

The phrase that ends the famous Hollywood movie was not used by chance by Nicusor Dan. The elected mayor needs the Ministry of Transport, which manages the metro and the ring road.

Nicusor Dan, mayor-elect of the capital: “To take the pressure on traffic, we need to consolidate public transport, here we are talking about the metro and the surface metro. We need to have the bypass. We need to have the bypass.”

For years, drivers have complained about the ring road. The widening works between National Route 2 and the Soarelui Autostrada started in May, but I’m keeping pace.

To solve the problem of congested crossings on the capital’s ring road, the Ministry of Transport made at least one curious decision. In Cernica he blocked the street that intersects with the ring road with such pieces of concrete, now, several towns that are beyond the capital ring road are practically broken by Bucharest, and drivers have to avoid a lot.

This has been going on for years. So some have abandoned their cars and have ridden bikes, even if they risk their lives.

The former mayor requested the belt and the metro from the Ministry of Transport. The new mayor demands something more: the railways abandoned by CFR Infraestructura, which surround the Capital or pass through the city.

The problem is that many rails were stolen, and gas stations, concrete mixers, car washes appeared on some disused lines. Those who own these businesses say they own the land.

Nicusor Dan wants to remake these lines for the surface light rail. As a show of support, the Government announces a feasibility study.

Ludovic Orban, Prime Minister of Romania: “This feasibility study covers the railway belt and also other important sections. Bucharest has many rail routes, of course some of which do not even exist, but they are owned by the state, managed by CFR SA and can always be the support of investments to improve traffic in Bucharest. “

In addition, Ludovic Orban promises that by the end of the year we will have workers on the entire south side of the ring road, parallel to the current ring road.

Nicusor Dan tells us that he knows about the problems of public transportation because he uses it often. And those who are in traffic, because they drive. On Friday, however, he arrived at the meeting at the Ministry of Transport by taxi.

Nicusor Dan: “I came by taxi because last night I had a glass of wine with friends and left the car. Now I’m going to pick it up.”
