Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, on a visit to Maramureş County, spoke about the Covid-19 pandemic in Romania and about the new measures, which will take effect on Monday.

– The pandemic, unfortunately, is a growing concern for us.
– Unfortunately, today we passed 10,000 newly infected people and we predicted this situation last night.
– Together with the Government, we have decided on new, firm, well thought out measures that will be applied from Monday.
– The measures are designed to significantly slow the spread of the pandemic.
– There are measures that will undoubtedly lead to a slowdown in the spread of the virus, measures that affect us all, but in such circumstances we must be united.
– Yesterday’s restrictions were expected and discussed with experts. We are expecting the first results in two or three weeks.
– Today is the first day of the electoral campaign. I ask for compliance with the measures imposed to make this campaign possible, even in a pandemic. I ask you to be an example for all Romanians.
– Unfortunately, very special measures are needed and I am determined to follow how they are observed.
– The measures are designed to enable physicians to care for those severely affected by the disease. These rules must be followed, and if things are done right, we have a chance to protect ourselves, make the economy work, and lead as normal a life as possible.
– On the possibility of entering the confinement: I believe that the measures are firm enough to allow us to have a campaign, to have a life close to normality, secure elections and power after the elections not to enter the lockdown phase.
– In recent weeks, the number of patients has grown rapidly. Today we are more than 10,000. This showed us that the measures that were taken were not enough. That is why new and stronger measures have been initiated and are being decided by the Government, which will be applied everywhere and will help to stop the spread of the pandemic.
– Closing markets: Last night we talked about market and fair closings. Speaking in more detail, I came to the conclusion that the best solution would be close the markets in closed spaces and continue the operation of those in open spaces.
– Transfer of critical patients abroad: Currently in Romania there are places in hospitals, but we have already started contacts with several states, I hope we do not get there, but in the end, we have contacts that we will take advantage of.

At 1 pm, the Head of State participated in the reopening of the Commemorative House museum “Gheorghe Pop de Băseşti” and in the ceremony of awarding the Anniversary Medal “Centenary of the Great Union” of the Museum of History and Archeology of the County of Maramureş , where he will deliver a speech.
From 14:45, President Iohannis participated in the presentation of the investment plan in the Northwest region, which will take place at the Maramureş City Hall.
