President Klaus Iohannis said Tuesday that a very difficult period awaits us and that sustained efforts are needed to keep the epidemic under control.

Iohannis held a press conference after a meeting with the Minister of Health and specialists in the field of medicine and intensive care.

“The epidemiological situation both at the European and national level is unfortunately constantly getting worse and only on the last day we had more than 100 Romanians who lost the fight against the virus. A very difficult period awaits us and sustained efforts are needed to keep the epidemic under control. The fight against the virus takes place on two fronts: on the one hand, in the area of prevention, through which we try to limit the transmission of the infection, and on the other hand, in hospitals, where patients with COVID-19 need specialized care and treatment. “Said the president.

Iohannis said that the fight against the virus occurs on two fronts: on the one hand, in the area of prevention and on the other hand in hospitals, where COVID patients need specialized care and treatment.

For this reason, I wanted to have an applied discussion with renowned experts and with the Minister of Health, who presented me with the level of resources at the national level in ATI and I also refer to the medical staff. During all this time, the Ministry of Health has carried out several projects for the purchase of fans, monitors, beds and other necessary elements for the ATI departments, for which we have 3,065 beds in total, 2,252 mechanical fans. Added to these are 5 mobile ATI units, two modular hospitals with 169 additional beds. As for the only functional ATI fans, I’ll just give you an example: between April and October 2020, the increase in the capacity of the fans nationwide was 73%, the capacity practically doubled in the fans “, said the President.

He specified that he requested very specific data on Bucharest where in 7 hospitals there will be an expansion of the ATI capacity and in the next 10 days at most we will have 123 additional intensive care beds.

“So the authorities have acted and have clear and well-developed plans,” he said.

662 Intensive Care beds will be purchased

The President also stated that there is approval for the purchase of 662 Intensive Care beds, from European funds, in the context of managing the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Access to European funds through the Large Infrastructure Operational Program (POIM) will further increase the capacity to manage the health crisis. Only for mechanical fans, for example, the increase from April 2020 to April 2021 will represent an increase of 146%, according to the data presented to me by the specialists, ”the head of state showed.

He specified that, “after the analysis of the needs of the hospitals, the entire range of apparatus and equipment necessary for the provision of health units will be acquired, through specific procedures – again from European funds – from monitors, fans, beds, anesthesia, even ultrasound. ” and RT-PCR devices “.

“For example, because we are talking about intensive care beds, 662 high-performance beds have already been approved for financing through this program and will be realized in the next period,” he said.

The president said that accessing European funds “will have a very important impact.” “We will have a significant increase in each of these indicators, the figures will be calculated with precision by specialists,” said the president.

Iohannis made the remarks after a meeting to evaluate and present the measures related to the management of the COVID-19 epidemic. It was attended by the Minister of Health, Nelu Tataru, the vice president of the Romanian Society of Anesthesia and Intensive Care, Dorel Sandesc, and the head of the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Unit I – Central Military Emergency University Hospital “Carol Davila” Bucharest, Dan Corneci.
