Klaus Iohannis talks to EU leaders about testing protocols and the Covid-19 vaccine

Klaus Iohannis discussed the problems EU member states face in handling the Covid-19 pandemic at a European Council meeting on Thursday night. The president said there were problems establishing common Covid-19 testing protocols and their recognition among EU member states, in order to facilitate free movement. The head of state also said that steps should be taken to avoid any deficiencies that may occur in the supply chain with a Covid-19 vaccine.

The President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, participated on Thursday, November 19 of this year in the meeting of the members of the European Council, in videoconference format, dedicated to aspects related to the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The videoconference was convened by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, being the second meeting on this subject, after the one held on October 29, 2020. The leaders of the EU Member States addressed issues related to the current management of the health crisis generated. of the COVID-19 pandemic, mainly in tests, vaccines and measures taken at the national level.

In his speech, the President of Romania stressed that strengthening the coordination of Member States is a priority, in a context in which the spread of the virus at EU level remains worrying.

With regard to testing, the President of Romania mentioned that it is important to ensure regular exchange of information and good practices on testing strategies and approaches. Regarding mutual recognition of evidence, President Klaus Iohannis stressed that this would facilitate free movement within the Union. At the same time, the President of Romania noted that there are still specific issues that need to be addressed to facilitate a common approach, such as correlating rapid tests with RT-PCR, agreeing on a set of common criteria and conditions to ensure an effective mechanism.

On vaccines, President Klaus Iohannis praised the European Commission’s efforts to negotiate with vaccine manufacturers.

The President of Romania mentioned that, at the national level, the vaccination strategy against COVID-19 is being finalized and, in this regard, the relevant guidelines of the European Union and the World Health Organization have been taken into account. President Klaus Iohannis pointed out that carrying out a large-scale vaccination campaign in a short period of time involves a large amount of medical supplies. Consequently, the President of Romania drew attention to the fact that all necessary measures must be taken to avoid any deficiencies that might appear in supply chains.

In this context, President Klaus Iohannis emphasized that the joint procurement procedures launched by the European Commission are useful and are important tools that Member States can rely on in the vaccination campaign.

At the same time, the President of Romania reiterated the importance of proper public communication on vaccination, advocating for an effective communication campaign at the Union level, in order to highlight the benefits of vaccination against COVID-19.
