At the first hours after becoming president of the United States, Jome Biden signed 17 presidential decrees. The first made it mandatory to wear a mask and keep your distance in all federal buildings. The others reversed a series of decisions made by Donald Trump: he initiated the process for the return of the United States in the Paris Agreement and blocked the exit of the World Health Organization. Other measures aim to stop the construction of the wall on the border with Mexico and protect young immigrants.
“I believe that some of the things that we will do will be bold and vital and there is no better time to start than today. I will begin by keeping my promises to the American people. We have a lot to do. These are just presidential decrees, they are important, but we need legislation for many of the things that we will do. The first order that I will sign is related to the COVID-19 pandemic and will require, as I said, the use of masks, the maintenance of physical distance in federal buildings and in the means of transportation that connect the states and so on. It’s the first one I signed, “Joe Biden said.
“We will fight climate change like we have never done before,” said Joe Biden, announcing Washington’s return to the Paris Agreement. The Democratic president had promised in the electoral campaign that he would put the United States back on track from the first day he arrived in the White House.
Former President Donald Trump had notified the UN of the United States’ intention to abandon the agreement in 2019, a decision that became official in November 2020.
Another order signed by Joe Biden aims to revoke the presidential authorization granted for the construction of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline. Launched in 2008, the project was blocked by former President Barack Obama, but reauthorized by President Donald Trump.
Another decision made by Biden is to end Trump’s travel ban on citizens of predominantly Muslim countries.
Biden also called on his administration to strengthen the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program for immigrant children.
The new president also ordered the revocation of a national emergency order that laid the groundwork for the reallocation of federal funds to build a wall along the US-Mexico border.
