The law was approved by the Vilnius Parliament and is due to enter into force on January 1, 2021. The bill, proposed by the Health Minister, also bans smoking in open sports stadiums, bus stops and cafeterias.
Lithuanians will no longer be able to smoke on their own balconies
The bill, proposed by Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga, bans smoking in outdoor sports facilities, bus stations, playgrounds and outdoor cafes.
Banning smoking on private balconies in apartment buildings, unless all residents agree, was a controversial proposal that parliament has considered several times since 2014. Defending the bill, MP Antanas Vinkus of the Social Democratic Labor Party , claimed that people were exposed to secondhand smoke by their neighbors.
„One person’s right to health takes precedence over another person’s right to smoke, “he said. Meanwhile, Andrius Mazuronis, from the liberal opposition movement, said the rule would be almost impossible to enforce.” It will be a rule, practically inapplicable “, he argued, adding that it could still work as a smoking deterrent.
In all, 69 lawmakers voted in favor of the bill, four opposed and seven abstained. The new regulations will come into force in 2021, reports lrt.lt.
