Romania strongly condemns the hasty steps in the Chisinau parliament to reduce the prerogatives of the president, as a pro-Western politician, Maia Sandu, prepares to lead the country in replacement of the current socialist president Igor Dodon.
Romania condemns not transparent and contrary to democratic practices in which they acted, on December 3, 2020, in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, the PSRM and the Platform “For Moldova”, which includes the Șor Party, blatantly ignoring the massive vote expressed by the citizens of the Republic of Moldova in the presidential elections of November 15, 2020, statement from the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Romania considers that the speed with which a series of amendments were adopted in the Chisinau Parliament, of great magnitude and with a great impact on the functioning of state institutions, without transparency in decision-making and without public consultation, without observing current parliamentary procedures, seriously affects the rule of law and the functioning of the democratic system in the Republic of Moldova, underlines the MFA statement.
Socialist deputies and those from the “For Moldavia” platform, which includes former members of the Pro Moldavia group and the Partyor Partido group, voted, without debate and without being examined, on various bills, such as the approval of information on the subordination of the Presidency to that of Parliament, the state of the Russian language in the Republic of Moldova, as well as the fiscal-budgetary policy, decisions criticized by the opposition and which led to street protests and altercations during the legislative session.
These steps are taking place in the conditions in which the country’s socialist president, Igor Dodon, considered pro-Russian, lost the elections and the new president will be Maia Sandu, considered a pro-Russian policy. However, it will be difficult for the president-elect to adopt reformist policies, given that there is a loyal majority in Igor Dodon in the Chisinau Parliament. On Thursday, before the parliamentary vote, Maia Sandu urged the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to go to protests and demand early elections.
“The way these political forces acted is even more so serious Well, clearly, the direct objective that was pursued was to limit the powers of the presidential office, which the candidate supported by the PSRM lost categorically and democratically in the presidential elections ”, shows the diplomacy from Bucharest. The Romanian side notes that “Look with special attention and concern” ongoing events in the Republic of Moldova and reiterates support for president-elect efforts to restore legality in the government process, according to the agenda validated by the vote cast on November 15, 2020 by the citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
At the same time, the Romanian side calls on all political parties to act responsibly and give priority to stability and the democratic path, in the European spirit, of the Republic of Moldova, notes the MFA.
