On Wednesday, President Klaus Iohannis held a press conference at the Cotroceni Palace, in which he addressed various topics of discussion, including the evolution of the COVID-19 epidemic in Romania, local elections and the start of the new school year .
Summary of statements by the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis:
– Unfortunately, we recorded a new record number of infections and a significant number of deaths on Wednesday. The pandemic is still far from over.
– The elimination of some restrictions, simultaneously with the appearance of the cold season, flu, creates a sensitive context and generates concern. Under no circumstances can we allow the medical system to handle a double epidemic of influenza and COVID-19.
– Schools have started again. Not everywhere did schools benefit from the resources necessary to keep the educational process in good condition. I call on the school directors to ask the local authorities for all the resources they need. I also ask all mayors and CSI to prioritize school problems.
– We ask the Government to do a complete evaluation after the first 2 weeks of classes and to present the vulnerabilities and solutions that we can take.
– Regarding local elections, I urge you to go to the polls on September 27. Our vote decides how the locations will change. Go to the polls and put the stamp on the candidates who will be able to achieve a change for the better.
Subsequently, Klaus Iohannis received a series of questions from the journalists present at the press conference.
The questions were the following:
– The MIA prepares to abolish the Homicide Service. How do you see its abolition?
We have not heard of the abolition of a vital service, maybe you have sources, we will check.
– PSD announced that it will vote the law of incentives of 500 euros for teachers. If it is approved by Parliament, will it enact it?
If I enact or not I will tell you then, but I can say something that saddened me and surprised me: today in the budget committees of the PSD, with the support of some trackers, they voted with amendments on the budget rectification and if everything they voted would apply, it would cost more than 6% of GDP. It is obvious that this money does not exist.
– Against the backdrop of Wednesday’s record number of COVID-19 cases, we can expect an increase. Is it necessary to postpone the elections?
At this point, there is no need to talk about postponing the elections. Things will be well organized, but the focus of each is still vital.
– Do you consider that a student without a tablet or phone still has the right to education?
Unfortunately, cases of this type still exist and not all authorities have been 100% involved in their resolution. Where there are situations, the authorities will find urgent solutions.
– Consider that new restrictions are imposedDo you regret the relaxation measures?
Relaxation measures were taken when the specialists said. I believe that Romania has acted with caution. We can live our lives close to normal, following the rules. Currently there are no new restrictions.
– Few Romanians have registered on the electoral roll of parliamentarians. What message are you sending to those abroad and how will the problem of the sections, which in some states cannot be installed due to COVID-19, be solved?
The vote-by-mail procedure is very helpful in this pandemic context and I ask the diaspora to register to vote by mail. We do not have any guarantee that it will be possible to open the sections in all the countries where we have Romanians. Otherwise, in some countries where there will be no polling stations, they may not be able to vote.
