President Klaus Iohannis declared that he will have a clarification meeting with the Minister of Justice, Cătălin Predoiu, on the number of Romanian prosecutors who will be delegated to carry out their activity within the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
President Klaus Iohannis declared, at a press conference in Cotroceni, that he “learned” of this dispute and of the exchange of correspondence with the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, led by Laura Codruța Kovesi and the Ministry of Justice, stating that they related to this issue.
“I heard about this correspondence. I will find out in a few days. But in the meantime, I have studied a little about what others do. Many European countries provide 2, 3, 4 prosecutors. Germany provides 11. I will have a discussion with the Minister of Justice , he will tell me how he got to this number, “replied Klaus Iohannis.
According to some government sources, Romania proposed to delegate 10 prosecutors to carry out their activity within the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, given that the head of this institution requested the delegation of 20-30 magistrates to investigate fraud with European funds.
Later, after the press conference, President Klaus Iohannis specified that he will have a conversation with the Minister of Justice as soon as possible, including on Wednesday.
The Romanian authorities agreed that ten prosecutors would work in the EPPO, but the proposal was rejected by the head of the EPPO, who requested that their number be doubled or even tripled. Laura Codruța Kovesi specified, in a correspondence with Minister Cătălin Predoiu, that Romania ranks first in Europe in terms of fraud with European funds.
In fact, according to the information published in the latest report of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), for 2019, Romania ranks first at the top of the European Union in terms of the number of fraud investigations with funds from the European Union. Our country occupies the first position, with 11 open investigations, followed by Italy with 9 investigations, Greece, Poland and Bulgaria, with 7 investigations each.
