Former police officer Eugen Stan was definitively sentenced to 20 years in prison with execution, in the case in which he is accused of pedophilia and sexual assault.

The decision was made by the judges of the Bucharest Court of Appeal.

The judges increased the sentence received by Eugen Stan in the lower court by one year.

The investigation in this case was carried out as a result of the complaint by the parents of two children – 5 and 9 years old from Sector 6 of the Capital – who were sexually assaulted in the elevator of a block of flats.

Investigators then reviewed several sexual assault cases committed since 2009 and stayed with an unknown perpetrator to determine if the police officer was the perpetrator.

Prosecutors from the Attorney General’s Office specified in 2018, when they referred Eugen Stan to court, that the former police officer had sexually assaulted 18 people, between the ages of 5 and 38.

“Between November 2, 2009 and January 5, 2018, the defendant Eugen Stan sexually assaulted 18 people, between the ages of 5 and 38, in various places in Bucharest. The defendant’s behavior was generally geared towards follow the victims on their way to the apartment blocks where they lived, committing the crimes, under duress exerted by the accused, on the stairs of the buildings or in their elevator, ”according to prosecutors.

At that time, in 2018, public opinion reacted and raised questions about the way the Romanian Police manages its human resources, considering that such accusations have been launched against Stan without anyone taking any action. As a result, at the MIA level, the decision was made to initiate an investigation at the IGPR.

Shortly afterwards, the Control Corps of the Interior Ministry requested the disciplinary investigation of 18 Romanian police employees, including the former Inspector General, Bogdan Despescu (currently Secretary of State in the Interior Ministry). At that time, Despescu was fired.
