The name of the late mayor of Deveselu commune, who is running for a new term, remained on the ballot papers because they were printed before the candidate’s death, according to representatives of BEJ Olt. And the deceased mayor was elected.

“According to a decision of the BEC, if the death of the candidate occurred after the ballots were printed, they will not change and the electoral process will continue its course,” said Bej Olt spokeswoman Monica Ţone, according to Agerpres.
In addition to the name of the late mayor Ion Aliman, PSD candidate, there are two names on the ballot papers for the election of the mayor of Deveselu commune: Ion Păun, ALDE candidate, and PMP candidate Dumitru Manuel Nică.
Ion Aliman died on September 17 at a hospital in the capital, about a week after testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection. He was elected mayor of the Deveselu commune in June 2012, then obtained a new term in 2016 and is now a candidate for the third term, from the PSD.
Ion Aliman was a naval officer for 30 years, of which he was captain of a passenger ship for 20 years.
During the period when Ion Aliman was mayor of the Deveselu commune, the missile defense system, a component of NATO’s ballistic missile defense system, was put into operation at the local military base.
