Nicușor Dan spoke to Digi24 about subway congestion and said this is “a sign that the other component of public transportation is not working. I’m talking about STB: trams, trolleys, buses. “The elected mayor of the Capital assured that during rush hours the means of transport will complement each other and recommends that all Bucharest residents wear a protective mask in open spaces.
Nicușor Dan: In normal times, the fact that the subway is crowded should not be a bad thing, it is proof of success, but in a period of coronavirus it is a sign that the other component of public transport is not working. I’m talking about STB: trams, trolleys, buses.
Public transportation must be operating at full capacity during peak hours. Let’s redistribute all resources at those peak times so we don’t have congestion.
As for the rest of the sanitary measures, over time we have come up with several sets of proposals.
First of all, the City Council of the capital must collaborate with DSP. Until now there has been no such collaboration that it is mandatory.
Secondly, the Capital City Council can, although it has not done so until now, have its own test system, that is, have tests, devices … It has these, but that means having its units independent from those of the Ministry of Health with which you can test, and also can do more than the Ministry of Health. You can go to those risk areas, which are the hospitals to which you subordinate, the care centers for the elderly, there are people exposed as drivers of public transport, or officials who are in direct contact with the public, and of course, Where there are outbreaks, you can expand what the Ministry of Health does, based on protocols that it can establish.
Now in Bucharest we are on the yellow stage, as the specialists said. It is a dangerous situation that must be treated with the utmost responsibility. It is very important to respect those basic measures that we all recommend.
I recommend that people wear a mask outdoors as well, not just indoors. It is very simple. I’ve been doing this since this crisis started. Let’s wash our hands and avoid crowded places.
On the issue of wearing a mask, there are some regulations that have been dictated by the central authorities and that require the use of a mask in an open space from a certain degree, which Bucharest has not yet reached.
I recommend all people to wear a protective mask outside, because it can only protect them and those in contact with them.
What can the City Council of the capital do? You can expand this type of measurement. That is, in addition to what is recommended by the Ministry of Health based on the protocols it has established, relax the definition of direct contact in the territory of Bucharest and thus expand the tests.
