Viitorul became a leading brand in Romania in one year, and Gică Hagi made three excellent decisions in one year, after the team missed the first tiebreaker in League 1.
First of all, Hagi made an excellent move by bringing in Gică Popescu, his old colleague from the Romanian team, who lost the election for the leadership of the FRF.
Then Hagi took a step back and found a new coach. For a time, “El Rey” will focus on the work of the Academy, trying to find new talents for the first team, so that they can then fight again to win the title and evolve in Europe.
Brought to Gică Popescu: a symbol of Romanian football, a guarantor of performance and a leader who opens any door
Last summer, Gică Hagi convinced Gică Popescu to come to Viitorul, the former great Barcelona defender being president of the former Romanian champion.
“It was not easy for me to convince him. The team has grown year after year and, when we turn 10 years old, it is time to develop, to take another step, to be better”Hagi said at the time.
A good friend of Gică Hagi and also a brother-in-law, Gică Popescu immediately assumed the position, helping to attract major sponsors.
In addition, Popescu, Iordănescu’s “defense pillar” in the 1994 World Cup, continued to work for the Euro 2021 project, a final phase in which Romania will not participate, after the defeat with Iceland, score 1-2.
Popescu’s soul project will take shape in December, when Bucharest finally has a train that will go from Gara de Nord to Otopeni airport.
He resigned from the technical bench: he dissociated his effervescent way of being as a coach from the image of the club and knew how to deal with the lobby and the Academy.
In August, Gica Hagi surprised everyone by bringing in Rubén de la Barrera, a 35-year-old Spaniard.
“We also play outside, we also have new relationships, we also know the world. Our football is very similar to Spanish, I tried to find a young man with energy, with a lot of personalityHagi said at the time.
Rubén de la Barrera did not start well after changing Viitorul’s style of play, but Hagi’s bet has a good chance of being a winner: the Spaniard, who was second to Asier Garitano in the Society, did not lose in five games and took a point with FC Argeș, coming back from 0-2.
Right now, Viitorul is in ninth place, tied with Clinceni and just one point away from sixth place, leading to the League 1 play-off.
He followed the philosophy of few business partners, but TOP: he was attracting sponsors of caliber and seeking investors to finance his great project.
Thanks to the image of Gică Hagi and the appearance of the Ovidiu Academy, Viitorul found important partners who really believed in the club’s project.
“Our vision of alliances is based on generating win-win opportunities, through which both the club and the members create value-added activities for all parties involved”, is the message of the future, on the official website.
Nike, OMV Petrom, Pepsi or BMW are among the sponsors that contribute to the Future budget. OMV Petrom is the most important of the sponsors and came with Hagi’s club this year. It was a real blow for Hagi to bring such an important brand to Viitorul.
OMV Petrom was in 2018 “the most profitable company in Romania”. In 2019, the business continued successfully and a turnover of 25.5 billion euros was reported, more than 5.1 billion euros.
“I am small and careless, but I say great things. If we want good football, we must have a budget of 20-26 million euros. Like our neighbors, who started buying our players. Our neighbors are already hitting us. No I think this is good for Romanians who belong to Romania. We cannot compete with those around us either. We cannot stay with the players. “ – Gica Hagi, in 2020
“When I start buying players, I will fight them. Otherwise, I will not stay. I will not stay How long do I stay? All the time to start from scratch, to do, to do, to do, to push, push, push… I produced a lot, I did something good ”– Gica Hagi, in 2019
3 trophies has FC Viitorul in 11 years since its foundation: the champion title in 2017, the Romanian Cup in 2019 and the Romanian Super Cup in 2019
