The beach expansion works, with sand brought from the Black Sea, have been carried out on the Romanian coast since October.
“We have identified two areas with fine sand. After disposal, the beaches will have a percentage of a maximum of 5% of shells. Thousands of tons of sand will be brought from the Black Sea and dumped on existing beaches, its width will increase next year by another 60-100 meters. And this is just the beginning of this phase of the ABADL project. After roads, this project conceived and implemented by the Dobrogea Water Basin Administration – Litoral is the largest in Romania at the moment. We really have a historic opportunity to increase the land area of our country by 225.5 hectares, with the start of beach widening works, benefiting almost the entire Romanian Black Sea coast from extensive beaches and coastal consolidation “, said Bogdan Bola , Director of the Administration Water basins by the sea of Dobrogea.
Where will the first works begin?
The first works will begin in the Mamaia and Năvodari area, and the second phase of the beach expansion works includes the sectors between Periboina and 2 Mai.
More than 25 million cubic meters of sand will be brought from the sea and, in the end, the Romanian coast will have more than 230 hectares in addition to the beach. “Starting this fall, we start sanding the Mamaia – Năvodari area. In the second half of October, we will start organizing for the Eforie area as well,” said Bogdan Bola. Currently, due to erosion, the Romanian coast loses annually up to one meter of its total area.
At Eforie and Agigea, works will begin in the spring, and the second phase of beach expansion is scheduled to end in 2023. Until then, the beaches will likely suffer in the summer season, following the works that will occupy the coast.
