The richest man in Brazil, the banker Joseph Safra, died on Thursday at the age of 82, of natural causes, in the city of Sao Paulo, the representatives of the bank that bears his name announced in a statement, AFP reported.
Born in 1938 in Beirut, a member of the Lebanese Jewish community, Joseph Safra moved to Brazil in 1962 to take over with his brothers a bank created by his father, who died the following year, writes agerpres.ro.

The Safra Group then became a financial empire, present today in more than 25 countries.
According to the annual ranking published by Forbes magazine, Joseph Safra was the richest man in Brazil and ranked 63rd at the top of the richest people in the world, with an estimated fortune of 23.2 billion dollars.

Joseph Safra was also an important philanthropist, donating part of his fortune to benefit projects in the field of medical research.
At the same time, the Brazilian magnate bought several sculptures made by Auguste Rodin, which he donated to the Pinacoteca de Sao Paulo, one of the main museums in this Brazilian metropolis.

In 1999, one of the brothers of the Brazilian banker Edmond, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease, died asphyxiated in a criminal arson in his Monaco apartment by one of the assistants of his medical team. The incident and the process that followed were widely publicized.
