Globally, only one in 10 people will be protected against COVID-19 in the first year after developing a vaccine, experts from Imperial College London say.
An analysis of the global production capacity of an anti-COVID vaccine shows that fewer than 2 billion doses could be administered in 2021, given that a vaccine would receive the green light in the first months, reports SkyNews.
Since seven of the eight vaccines currently in the final testing phase require two doses per person, the researchers’ calculations show that only about 12% of the world’s 7.8 billion people will be immunized.
Cleo Kontoravdi, associate professor of chemical engineering at Imperial College London, said “We must be clear that not everyone will have access to the vaccine in the first instance. We do not have this production capacity.”
The Coalition for Innovations in Epidemic Preparedness analysis shows that Less than half of the world’s population could be protected by the end of 2022.
This could mean that Travel restrictions and social distancing will continue to be necessary for years to come., unless a method is discovered to accelerate vaccine production capacity.
Globally, since the discovery of the new coronavirus in Wuhan late last year, more than 30.5 million cases and more than 950,000 deaths have been reported, according to Johns Hopkins University.
