Simona Halep, the top seed, defeated Irina Begu 6-3, 6-4, on Wednesday, in a Romanian duel held in the second round of the Grand Slam tennis tournament at Roland Garros, reports Agerpres.
Halep (29 years, 2 WTA) closed the accounts in one hour and 23 minutes and will play in the third round with American Amanda Anisimova.
Simona, champion of Roland Garros in 2018, started very well and led 3-0 and 4-1, but Begu (30 years, 73 WTA) gave a good response and managed to get closer to 4-3 and served to equalize, but Halep left only two points in the last two games, finishing 6-3.
The second act was more balanced, with Irina playing aggressively, neither player failed to separate from the table. Begu took the first ball, then Halep won two in a row, Irina also tied two balls (3-2), also led 4-3, but Halep equalized and made the break, closing the scores with 6 -4.
Halep had significantly better percentages at work, had fewer direct ball wins, 15-22, but also fewer unforced errors, 14-29.
Simona Halep got a check for 126,000 euros and 130 WTA points
Halep has already achieved eight victories in the same number of direct matches with Begu. The previous match took place in August, in the semi-finals in Prague, with Simona winning 7-6 (2), 6-3, after which she won the title.
Simona Halep secured a check for 126,000 euros and 130 WTA points, while Begu was left with 84,000 and 70 WTA points. Begu will continue in doubles, where he will partner with Raluca Olaru.
In the third round, Halep will face Amanda Anisimova (19 years old, 29 WTA), who defeated her compatriot Bernarda Pera on Wednesday 6-2, 6-0, in just 57 minutes.
Halep and Anisimova met only once, last year, in the Roland Garros quarter-finals, and the American won surprisingly 6-2, 6-4.
Three other Romanians will perform in the second round in Paris on Thursday, Patricia Ţig, Ana Bogdan and Irina Bara.
