The Holy Prophet Daniel and the three young saints, Ananias, Azarias and Misail, are mentioned in the Orthodox Christian calendar on December 17.
The prophet Daniel was of royal descent and was taken with other young Jews, including his friends, Ananias, Azarias, and Misail, into Babylonian captivity (597-538 BC).
The Babylonian emperor Nebuchadnezzar, in order to bring the Jews closer together, ordered the mayor of his palace to teach the book and the Haldite language to the most representative of the young people of this captive nation. Nebuchadnezzar wanted to make them faithful servants of the throne. Their names were also changed: Daniel was called Baltasar, Ananías – Sedrah, Azarías – Abdenago and Misail – Misah.
The book of the Holy Prophet Daniel, contained in the Old Testament, shows that Daniel and his friends were very fond of the law of the fathers. Although they had the right to eat and drink from the king’s table, they fed on seeds and water to avoid contamination. God rewarded her purity with wisdom and beauty.
These young people are mentioned by the Church in the prayer to God for the blessing of the cage or other princesses: “Who showed the three young people and Daniel, who were in Babylon, fed with seeds, more beautiful than those fed with many pleasures. “.
But the Babylonian servants told King Nebuchadnezzar that Daniel’s three friends refused to worship a statue erected by the king, and were thrown into a hot furnace, but God protected them and the fire turned to dew (Daniel III, 17 ).
The Holy Prophet Daniel was known for his gift of interpreting dreams. In the Old Testament, the book that bears his name contains the interpretation of the dreams of the last two kings of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar and Balthazar, as well as the vision of the Holy Prophet Daniel about the time until the coming of the Messiah, the revelation of the last days of humanity, resurrection of the dead.
After the conquest of Babylon by King Darius I of the Persians (518 BC), the Holy Prophet Daniel did not return to the country with his Jewish brothers because he did not want to leave those who could not leave alone.
The new conqueror, because of the intrigues, had to order that the Holy Prophet Daniel be thrown into a den of lions, but God took care of his servant and the lions did not approach him (Daniel VI, 17-29).
The Holy Prophet Daniel was chosen by God to support the Jewish people with their rulers and make the true God known among the pagans.
