Record number of deaths caused by COVID-19 in Germany, where 1,244 victims were reported in 24 hours. It is the highest number of daily victims in this state since the start of the pandemic.

The country is far from getting back to normal, although the vaccination campaign has started, said the health minister in Berlin after the dismal record of deaths caused by the new coronavirus in the last 24 hours, writes Deutsche Welle.

Before the negative record of 1,244 deaths, Germany reported 962 deaths. The country also recorded 22,459 new coronavirus infections in the same 24-hour period.

Germany, along with many other EU countries, launched the vaccination campaign on December 27, with the elderly and healthcare workers first in line.

Germany is in national quarantine until January 10 and the restrictions will most likely be extended. Any relaxation of the restrictions after January 10 will be decided at a meeting of the federal government and state prime ministers scheduled for January 5.

Almost 1.7 million infections and more than 32,000 deaths have so far caused the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany.
