A team of French firefighters has been dispatched to the UK, at the port of Dover, to bring coronavirus tests to TIR drivers who have been waiting for several days to cross the border and return to the mainland, The Independent reports.

The French ambassador to the UK announced that 26 firefighters had been dispatched to bring 10,000 coronavirus tests to the port to allow drivers to reach the mainland in time for winter holidays.

Thousands of truck drivers trying to cross the English Channel to reach France from the UK were detained at the border in the context of the coronavirus pandemic and the situation related to the mutant coronavirus that has spread uncontrollably in this country.

France later announced that it would allow crossing the border if drivers could prove a negative coronavirus test. However, British authorities did not have the capacity to perform these tests and drivers were stuck in queues for hours at the port of Dover and at a nearby disused airport.

One day ago angry drivers expressed frustration while fighting with British police. In the images broadcast on television and published on social networks, physical confrontations between police officers and drivers can be seen. Law enforcement tried to control angry drivers who gathered to express their frustration as they spent hours waiting to reach the mainland.

Kent police said one person had been arrested in connection with “disruptions” at Dover and a disused Manston airport used to park vehicles.
